Formal Report Instructions

Well, next week is the turn-in dates for the Formal Report. When you prepare your written document for hand-in, please do the following:

1. No staples, binders, covers, etc. Use a large paperclip or small binder clip.
2. With one color highlighter, highlight all of the in-text visual aid cites (Figure 1, Table 2, etc.) and their corresponding captions and all Appendix cites, if used.
3. With another color highlighter, highlight all in-text APA parenthetical citations.
4. Attach a copy of the printed Turn-it-In report on the back.

Then, e-mail me a copy of the electronic document file, making sure your last name is part of the file name.

Summary of Qualifications Group Blog Assign

Hello, everyone. This is a group blog assignment (remember those???). Someone from each group will have to go in and write the prompt post.

Write your summary of qualifications draft, and post it to the blog as a comment to the prompt. Then, each group member is to read the SoQ and reply with what is working, and what could be better. Then, you will use the comments you receive to tweak your SoQ for your resume’.

Creating Video Presentations

Now that you are all working on, or completing, your video presentations, please reflect on the experience here. What worked well and what could have worked better? How did you find the experience? What suggestions or advice would you give your classmates? Responses should be at least 5-6 well-written sentences.

Plain Language Initiative

We talked a little in class about the Plain Language Initiative and so this week let’s discuss this issue. Read the case at the end of Chapter 4, but do not complete the assignments. Google “Plain Language” and investigate some of the sites, especially Wikipedia and the PLAIN website. Then, tell us what you think in about 250-300 words by Friday, March 14, 2010. Enjoy!!

More on p2p File Sharing Lawsuits

I was searching around for more information on p2p file sharing sites such as Limewire and Frostwire, and came across this site:

This site list a ton of cases concerning the RIAA and Record Labels’ lawsuits against both the file sharer and the downloader…check out these tow jury awards:

In these two cases alone, the awards ranged from $9250 per song to $22500 per song, although in many of these cases the actual damages are more like $1.40 per song. The moral of this story is that if you get caught and hauled into court and RIAA and the Record Labels are going to squeeze you like a orange and extract huge penalties in terms of punitive damages.

Week 5 Group Blog Assignment

Since we were discussing audience analysis I think some blogging about it might be helpful. Since I am posting this late on Friday, you can have until next Friday to complete the activity. Please make sure someone in the group generates a blog post about the assignment, then go into the blog using your own account and leave a comment. then, go to your group members’ comments and leave helpful reply.

Here is the scenario:

You have been hired by the admissions department at The University of Southern Mississippi as a college recruiter. You job duties include going out and making presentations to groups of potential new Eagles. For each of the following 4 groups, discuss in your post some of the topics you might need to cover in your presentation. In other words, based on the groups below, what are those students (and possibly their parents) going to be most interested in, or attracted by at USM.

1) A group of high school students from Catholic schools in New Orleans held at night at Tulane University.

2) A group of second-year students at local community colleges who have come to campus for a tour and visit.

3) A group of disadvantaged city high school students in Jackson, who have been gathered at the Convention Center during school hours for a “College Day”.

4) A group of new army basic training graduates presented at Camp Shelby.
